The Orcadian Review - 30 June 05

The Orcadian Review June '05 The Firelounge, Kirkwall By Leah Seator

The Gutter Sound, a new Orkney Punk band with plenty of attitude. This band, who will be on tour in the near future, exploded on to the stage, and no one can deny that they were probably the highlight of the night.
Everything about them is polished, tight, and perfect, from the songs right down to the stage act. There's no doubt that in a band like this it is essential to have a personality and attitude that feeds into the audience.
Singer Erica pretty much has it nailed, showing off her experience as a punk princess, who could be likened to icons such as Shirley Manson and Blondie, both in voice and movement.
Their set of well-written punky/poppy songs could just be their ticket to higher ground if heard in the rught place. The guitar work from Adam Clarkson and Rob MacGregor was detailed and well synchronised, and manic bass player Dave Hourie and drummer Erik Laughton were the isicin on the cake as far as a solid and funky rhythm section is concerned.
The addition of Duncan Drever on keyboards added extra depth and even more fun to the band's kicking repertoire.
There's nothing boring about this band. Their songs, Motel, Killer, Disco, Mirrors, 23 and particularly Makebelievers, will sell records. It doesn't matter who produces them - they are already tight and catchy enough and they fit the commercial bill right now. They are doing some recording in Inverness in the near future, so watch this space.
